3 Ways Businesses Should Use Keywords to Increase Sales

Most companies now have a presence on the Internet, and if not they are sorting one out so that they can compete on a new level with other businesses in their market. A few months ago I worked with a company who were trying to get a web presence, they currently had a website but it looked about ten years old and it felt it, it was very hard to find the information you wanted and in turn this was probably losing them sales.

As the company wanted someone on the cheap, they enlisted the school I was at to find some potential students to help on the project; I was asked and accepted as it seemed like a great opportunity.

What I Had To Do

My task was to create a new website, but not just one which looked good; it also had to have the ability to bring new customers in. There were three main ways that I decided to approach this, and I would like to present these to you below;

1 – Ranking the Company Name

This is the most obvious, but one which tends to slip people by as they focus on different factors, factors which they see as more important. However, this is the most important keyword ranking as you need to be able to be discovered by people who already know about you. One of the worst things you can do is get a customer through word of mouth, or other marketing techniques, then to suddenly lose them when they try and track you down using the Internet.

To rank the company name, you obviously need to use it in your URL, the title of the website and then also the content. Don’t just assume that because you are that company you will rank at the top, Google doesn’t work like that. Take this website for example, I have Profit Duck in the title, I have it in the URL and guess what? I know have it in some of my content, this means that when people search for Profit Duck, they end up here. Yes it is a bit different because I have a unique brand name, when you may have something which is more competitive, but the principles are the same.

2 – Ranking Keywords

Secondly you need to sit down and write a list of keywords you want to rank well for, not always at the top, but in the first page. I did this with the company I was working at, and they decided that the best things to rank were the products that they were selling/installing for people. As well as this they searched around their main competitors and looked at what they ranked well for, they then added these keywords to the list, as this would allow them to try and take custom of their rivals.

Ranking these keywords is much like ranking your company name. Make sure you put these keywords into your content, multiple times, but make sure it also makes sense! The amount of business websites which just write content to rank high, and not actually make a sale, is ludicrous, don’t make the mistake!

3 – Finally you need to try and beat your competitors.

One strategy is to do what I mentioned in point 2, try and rank higher than them on certain keywords. Another way is to take over their company name pages.

When I was looking through the competitor’s websites of the company I was working for, I searched them on Google, and this lead to me seeing that they were all using Adwords on each others pages, trying to steal the custom before anyone realised. This may not just be a way to gain customers, but it also a must to try and protect your customer base going to a different company.

To do this you will need an Adwords account, which will enable you to buy advertising space on Google and set it so that it shows on certain keywords, which of course will be your competitor’s company names.

By following these simple points you will start to make a presence on the website, even if it doesn’t gain you many new customers, it ensures that you don’t lose any.
